Kind heart, fierce mind, and a brave spirit are what which keeps an inbred Pit Bull alive. The inbred Pit Bull called Sassy looks a little different from other Pit Bulls and was a dwarf from birth along with some other serious health issues. She has bowed front legs, flipper feet, and she has extreme hip dysplasia in her rear legs and she also can’t bark because of her trachea being bent in the shape of a lowercase ‘n’. Ernie Altamirano living in Oyster Bay, New York adopted Sassy after following her virtually on Facebook after she was taken in by Forgotten Friends of Long
Island, in 2012.
When Ernie Altamirano took her in he was told Sassy won’t live long, but Sassy survived against all the odds. The living conditions and the surroundings Ernie could provide Sassy were thought to be as best by the rescue team. Ernie’s desire and will to adopt Sassy also moved the rescue team greatly and they ended up selecting Ernie as Sassy’s adopter instead of thousand offers from other adopters.
Ernie lived with 3 rescue dogs which provided Sassy a perfect and welcoming environment. Although Sassy did face some rejection and non-acceptance from Ernie’s other dogs and his neighbors also. But eventually, as time passed changed their opinion and enjoyed spending time with Sassy and found her to be quite a spirited dog. Ernie also hired a dog trainer to help all his dogs get along nicely. Initially, Ernie’s youngest dog, a Chihuahua–Greyhound mix, was downright terrified on seeing Sassy but eventually, he got along with her.
Ernie then recalls that one day he got a call from one of the foster mom’s from Forgotten Friends of Long Island about the rescue of a small dog called Chiqui. Eventually, after some deliberation, Ernie adopted Chique also. But Chique had some serious vision problems and it was turning out to be really problematic for Ernie to look after Sassy and Chiqui together. He decided to turn back Chiqui again but then he saw something which changed his decision. He saw Chiqui and Sassy cuddling together and Sassy helping the blind dog around by leading his way. It was clearly a special bond forming and Ernie just couldn’t separate the two then. Sassy now lives happily with her family and as
a great companion to Chiqui.
